How we score it
Start at 100. Deduct for temperature outside 75–95°F, wind over 10/15/20 mph, and rain chance over 30/60%. A severe coastal alert (tropical systems, rip current warnings, storm surge) overrides everything to No-go. The two biggest deductions become the "why" — no black box.

Local knowledge
The stuff the widgets won't tell you
Flags are law, not vibes. Green means go, yellow means respect it, red means the Gulf is actively dangerous, purple means stinging marine life. Lifeguards fly them at Stewart and East Beach in season.
The rocks are the risk. Rip currents form alongside the granite groins — swim the middle of the sand, keep 100 feet off the rocks, and never swim at San Luis Pass, where the current has taken strong swimmers.
Seaweed season is real but survivable. Sargassum arrives in pulses spring through mid-summer. It's harmless, it means the beach cleanup crews are working, and the paid beaches clear it fastest.
After a storm is the secret window. An hour after rain clears, the beach is empty, rinsed, and lit like a postcard — the sunset-and-oysters plan exists for exactly that moment.

Why is the water brown or green instead of blue?
Sediment from the Mississippi and local bays, not pollution. The Gulf here is swimmable nearly all the time — it just doesn't do postcard turquoise. Clearer green water shows up on calm days and later in summer.
What is the best month for a Galveston beach trip?
May and October are the local picks: warm water (82°F average both months), smaller crowds, and softer heat than July–August. June–September is peak season — hot, busy, and bath-warm water.
Are rip currents a problem in Galveston?
Yes, especially near the rock groins and at San Luis Pass (where swimming is genuinely dangerous and prohibited). Swim near lifeguards, keep 100 feet off the rocks, and treat red flags as law.
