Galveston beach advice locals follow

The rocks are the risk. Rip currents form alongside the granite groins — swim the middle of the sand, keep 100 feet off the rocks, and never swim at San Luis Pass, where the current has taken strong swimmers. Those same groins and piers are the island's best free shore fishing — legal to cast from, no boat or charter needed.

Seaweed season is real but survivable. Sargassum arrives in pulses spring through mid-summer. It's harmless, it means the beach cleanup crews are working, and the paid beaches clear it fastest.

After a storm is the secret window. An hour after rain clears, the beach is empty, rinsed, and lit like a postcard — the sunset-and-oysters plan exists for exactly that moment.

Which Galveston beach is best for families?

Stewart Beach — it is the family default: seasonal lifeguards, restrooms, chair and umbrella rentals, and no alcohol. East Beach is the big, loud, alcohol-allowed one; the West End and State Park are quieter and less developed.

Are Galveston beaches free?

The seawall beaches and the West End are free — you only pay to park. Stewart Beach and East Beach charge a per-vehicle entry fee in season, and Galveston Island State Park is about $5 per adult.

Where can you drink alcohol on the beach in Galveston?

East Beach is the island’s designated party beach where alcohol is allowed. Stewart Beach bans it outright, and the seawall and West End stretches follow the city open-container rules — check posted signs before you pack a cooler.
