Where to park free, buy groceries, find a pharmacy, fill up, and stay dry — the local logistics nobody puts in one place. So we did.
Parking
- • Free Seawall zones: north side at 12–19, 33–39, 53–61, 85–91 streets.
- • Paid Seawall: $1/hr, $8/day via PayByPhone — enforced 10am–6pm only.
- • Downtown/Strand: free street parking a block off the main drag most weekdays.

Groceries & supplies
- • Kroger, 5730 Seawall Blvd — main island grocery, pharmacy, ~6am–11pm.
- • Walmart on the island for the bigger-box run.
- • Nearest H-E-B is off-island (League City) — grab it on the way in.
- • Beach gear & liquor: shops all along the Seawall.
Medical
- • UTMB emergency room — east-end campus, off Harborside Drive (major hospital).
- • UTMB Urgent Care, 6416 Broadway — walk-ins daily 9am–9pm.
- • Pharmacies at Kroger and Walmart.
- • Program these before you need them.
Gas, ATMs & money
- • Gas is cheaper off-island — top up before the causeway if you can.
- • Stations cluster along Broadway (the main drag in) and 61st St.
- • ATMs at the Kroger, Walmart, and downtown banks.
- • Most spots take cards; the trolley/bus needs exact cash.
Restrooms & showers
- • Public restrooms at Stewart Beach, East Beach, and the Seawall pocket parks.
- • Beach showers (rinse-off) at the paid beaches.
- • Downtown: Pier 21 and the Strand visitor areas.
- • Free-beach stretches are thin on facilities — plan around it.
Connectivity
- • Cell coverage is solid island-wide; it slows near the terminal on double-ship days.
- • Free wifi: MOD Coffee, the library, most hotels and cafes.
- • Download offline maps before a beach-house week on the far West End.

🌀 Hurricane season
June–Nov, peaks Aug–Sep. Usually fine — watch the forecast, know that I-45 north is the only way off. Live alerts on our dashboard.
🟤 Sargassum
Seaweed pulses spring–summer. Harmless, just less pretty. Paid beaches groom it fastest.
🪼 Sun & stingers
The Gulf sun is no joke — reef-safe sunscreen, reapply. Watch for jellyfish and the purple flag; shuffle your feet for rays.

Where can I park for free on the Seawall?
Free parking sits on the north (inland) side of Seawall Blvd between 12th–19th, 33rd–39th, 53rd–61st, and 85th–91st streets. Everywhere else along the Seawall is paid ($1/hr, $8/day) via the PayByPhone app, enforced 10am–6pm daily — free before 10am and after 6pm.
Is there a grocery store on the island?
Yes — Kroger at 5730 Seawall Blvd is the main island grocery (open ~6am–11pm, with a pharmacy and Starbucks), plus a Walmart on the island. The nearest H-E-B is off-island toward League City, so stock up before crossing the causeway if H-E-B is your must.
Where do I go if someone gets hurt or sick?
UTMB Health runs the full emergency room on the east-end campus (access off Harborside Drive) — it's a major teaching hospital. For non-emergencies, UTMB Urgent Care at 6416 Broadway takes walk-ins daily 9am–9pm. Pharmacies: the Kroger and Walmart on the island.
When is hurricane season, and should I worry?
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1–November 30, peaking Aug–Sep. Most visits are completely fine, but watch the forecast in late summer, know your evacuation route (I-45 north — the only road off), and heed local warnings. Our live dashboard surfaces active NWS alerts automatically.
What is the seaweed (sargassum) situation?
Sargassum washes up in pulses spring through mid-summer. It's natural and harmless — just less pretty. Paid beaches (Stewart, East Beach) groom it fastest; the east end and after a wind shift are your cleaner bets.
