The Strand, Galveston

The Strand Historic District is the best walking district for things to do in downtown Galveston: Victorian ironfront blocks, museums, Pier 21 harbor views, food, and shops in a compact few hours.

The history: The Strand was Galveston’s 19th-century commercial core, where banks, cotton brokers, and shipping firms earned it the nickname "Wall Street of the Southwest." Its Victorian iron-front brick buildings, most built between the 1870s and 1890s, now form a National Historic Landmark district.

Best use: A compact few hours of food, shops, history, and working-port views.
