Sunset over the Gulf at the end of a Galveston day

The plan

The $50 Full Island Day

Beach, the Strand, a dolphin ferry, and two real meals — fifty bucks total.

~10 hours $

Galveston’s best assets — the Gulf, the seawall, the Victorian streets, the ferry, the sunset — are free. Fifty dollars covers everything else with change left over. Here’s the day, itemized and timed.

The itinerary

8:00a — Free beach, cheap coffee ($8). Seawall stretches, metered parking (~$2/hr — feed two hours), coffee and a taco at MOD. Hotel buffets are charging four times this for worse.

10:30a — The Strand ($0). The Victorian ironfronts are the attraction and they’re free. Duck into La King’s for the taffy machines (watching is free; a $4 scoop is the optional upgrade). Skip every shop with an airbrushed shark head out front. The full Strand filter →

12:00p — The fried-shrimp lunch ($14). Shrimp N Stuff: basket, hushpuppies, drink, picnic table. The island’s best price-to-shrimp ratio since 1976.

1:30p — Pier 21 harbor walk ($0). Shrimp boats, the 1877 tall ship Elissa from the dock, working waterfront.

2:30p — The free ferry ($0). Walk on, ride over and back, watch for the dolphins that escort most crossings. The full ferry play →

5:30p — Golden hour on the rocks ($0). Walk out a rock groin and watch the Gulf do its end-of-day show — today’s exact sunset time is at the top of this page.

7:00p — The sunset treat ($15–18). A half-dozen oysters and a beer at Benno’s — or hold the line completely with ice cream at La King’s and bank the difference.

The tally

ItemCost
Parking + coffee/taco$10
Shrimp lunch$14
Strand + harbor + ferry + sunset$0
Evening treat$18
Total~$42

What we deliberately cut

Pleasure Pier ride passes (they’d eat the whole budget — let the pier be scenery tonight), paid beach entry (the free sand is the same sand), and anything with a sidewalk host waving you in. This isn’t the compromise version of Galveston — it’s most of the good stuff minus the markup.
